IRON resolve. Classy. Principled. Compassionate.
BERSIH 2.0 on July 9th will be remembered for many things for the thousands who turned up despite the Fear Factor. Still buoyant over his ridiculously roundabout route to the foot of the stadium's hill, JAYANATH APPUDURAI shares with us his scrapbook of that haze-tinted day
As promised the “lockdown” was comprehensive. They were determined to deny the Rakyat the right to peaceful assembly!
So they thought they had the Rakyat ‘snookered’!
But the Rakyat had other thoughts!
We will not be intimidated… We will have our “Walk for Democracy” come what may!
So the People came in all the diversity our bountiful nation is blessed with…
This lovely couple epitomized the spirit of the silent majority….
And he walked for all those who for whatever reason stayed away.
It did not matter if there were 6000 or 50,000! The Rakyat have spoken – we do not fear the tear gas, the water cannons or the barbed wire! We will have our version of “Freedom Square”.
And the rain was not going to stop us
From making our stand at Merdeka Stadium!
And who better to do it with than our very own ‘Tagore’. Folks, it was just awesome! It was a soul-enhancing day! “We want free and fair elections, Thank You.”

1st May 2011, 10:30am Chow Kit Monorail area. Arrests were already made. SUARAM reports, in total, 21 were taken in by the police.
I walked from Chow Kit Monorail to the location near Maju Junction, right in front of the building where SUHAKAM's office is currently situated. This year's Workers' Day Celebration was continued there. Presented below are pictures of the event.
A group was gathered and more were on their way, some travelling all the way from Perak to celebrate Workers' Day together in solidarity. This year their demand is for the government to pass Minimum Wage Act (Akta Gaji Minima). It is a modest, simple and a reasonable basic demand, really.

THE rain stayed away this past Sunday afternoon - to everyone's relief - and in its absence a rainbow spread over the delirious district of Chow Kit. Camped just outside KL Krashpad, a 24-hour youth centre, 10 teenagers presented a sonic, pulse-pumping and visual gift to their neighborhood. The message - togetherness; within all that diversity, togetherness. For us who were there to enjoy the afternoon, we discovered once again that terima kasih is more than mere greeting. That good things do dwell in the exchange of love.
We. Us. Our.
That's Chow Kit Kita.
